Lost Blogging Collective Q&A - Week 9

For those of you not in the know, this has been a hectic week and a bit - but thankfully the website has been ticking over, and I can now (finally) give you all the Questions and Answers for week 9 of Lost!

To make up for the crazy, this week is a bumper 4 question edition, and later in the week you will be getting a bonus question from our Lost Blogging Collective, before normal service resumes again with Week 11. So without further ado, on with the show.

1) What one aspect of Lost turned you from a 'normal' fan into a 'hardcore' Lostie?
2) What are some of your favourite Lost-related websites?
3) How will Desmond, the package, the constant, the variable, feature in the final showdown?
4) Who is the father of Alt Sun's Alt child?

1) I don't think there was any one thing that made me crazy for Lost. I think that I may have been hooked right from the pilot episode. It always has seemed more like a movie-watching experience than a television show. It is just leaps and bounds more entertaining than anything I have ever watched on TV. Also, the way the producers and writers love the fan's input and participation in the show is really awesome too.

2) On Wednesday mornings, I am usually spending half my morning on DarkUFO's website (my Weekly Website review). Not to mention all the rest of the days of the week. I also enjoy Jorge Garcia's blog and his podcasts (my WW review of both). Love Damon and Carlton's podcasts too. Of course, yours too Chris!!

3) I honestly do not have a clue. He was so absent from last season, that I was beginning to think he was not as "special" as I always hoped him to be. I am very excited and anxious to see how he fits back into the realm of things!! I'll be curious to read some of the other answers to this question.

4) Hmmm....maybe Michael. Him and Sun seemed to have a little chemistry when they first started communicating together.

1) I have to say it was the number of "white moments" in Season 1 - those powerhouse happy and/or cathartic moments that uplifted the viewers beyond watching LOST and into experiencing LOST. Yes, the mysteries were there, but they were linked to these glory moments where (with a little help from the actors and Michael Giacchino) your soul soared. One of the earliest and most renowned of these was the revelation of Locke's having been wheel-chair bound prior to the crash in 1.04 (Walkabout). Yes, the mystery of how he'd been healed induced goosebumps, but the sheer power of watching Terry O'Quinn smile at the wheelchair beside the fuselage pyre as the music swelled took these goosebumps and turned them into joy. The characters got moment after moment like this through Season 1 - wrought with both high tragedy and high catharsis, and still every now and again they occur. The power of Ben's recent "white moment" in Dr. Linus has made it one of the episode most popular of the Season thus far, and for me how highly Season 6 ranks in amongst the best episodes of the series, will depend on how well LOST executes these moments as it moves into it's endgame. Keep in mind, I'm not saying things need to be HAPPY - they just need to be full of REDEMPTION, PAY-OFF, and RESOLUTION. Season 1 did this again and again, and THAT's the reason I love LOST.

2) nikkistafford.blogspot.com (WW) - best insightful recaps, most intelligent discussion community - darkufo.blogspot.com (WW) - best collection of LOST news, but beware of spoilers! The strong of will can avoid them easily there! www.lostpedia.com - best source of encyclopedic LOST info. Period. Want to know anything? Go there. sagaciouspenguin.blogspot.com - yes, I love my own site. A healthy ego is a requirement of all who spend their time blogging! Plus, writing my analyses and breaking the mysteries down into as few questions as possible helps me keep LOST as simple as possible in my head!

3) Desmond IS the package from what I gather, and judging from the fact that Widmore needs both Desmond and the locations of the Island's pockets of electromagnetism to move his scheme forward, I'd say he's fixing to do some time-travel craziness to repair whatever damage was caused to the Island by Desmond's turn of the failsafe key in the Season 2 finale: Meaning the cork is leaky and needs the guy-who-can-break-all-the-rules to repair it. The Constant? Without Penny, Des wouldn't have the strength it'll take to make whatever tough choices are ahead to repair the Island and space/time. The Variable? Faraday says people's ability to induce unexpected change is the ultimate Variable that can thwart the "Whatever Happened, Happened" agenda of fate -- on the show, this has seemingly taken the form of the Altered Universe: the consequence of Jack leading his troops to change the future. In the final showdown, I'm guessing our heroes may just have to sacrifice both themselves and the Island to save space/time from imploding via the Island's stores of Electromagnetic energy. If this happens, maybe the Altered Universe is the loophole that will allow them to live despite their sacrifice. Either that, or the Original Timeline (what was Constant) will have to be destroyed to allow the Altered Timeline (the Variable) to live on -- the universe's way of "course-correcting" the results of The Incident.

4) Alt Jae Lee!

1) Two big season 1 things got me hooked on the show: the numbers and the hatch. I just had to know what the deal with these things were. It was interesting to see the numbers show up in so many random ways in each episode. The whole plot with the hatch was awesome. I had to know what that thing was and what was down there.

I also found it cool during the early seasons of the show how there was so much of a viral aspect to the show's marketing. I remember how big of a deal the Oceanic Web site was and that you could click on the character's seats and find cool Easter eggs. I also remember how each new thing mentioned on the show would soon be a Web site. Hurley works at Mr. Clucks ... check out Mr. Clucks Web site for more Easter eggs. This is a fun side note about Lost that people who came to it late or who only watched the DVDs later never got to experience.

2) As I mentioned in the previous response, I enjoyed the early viral Web sites that were created to promote the show and everything in it. Now I pretty much stick to blogs and sites that talk about Lost. My favorites are Doc Jensen/EW's Totally Lost, DarkUFO, LongLiveLocke, Lostpedia, Zap2It's Guide to Lost, Lost Media & Get Lost Podcast (for screen captures), etc. I've also enjoyed Jorge Garcia's Geronimo Jack's Beard podcasts, but I'm a few episodes behind.

3) I'm not sure how or why Desmond is the key to Lost, but I just know he is. As Faraday said, he's uniquely special and the rules don't apply to him. Is he a candidate? I don't think so, but he is likely the key to ultimately stopping Man in Black.

4) It might be the simple answer, but I think Jin's the father. I don't think we're in for a big swerve here. I think the swerve already happened with then not being married and Sun getting shot. I guess in sideways world, Jin is fertile and they don't have the same issues they had in their pre-815 life.

1) I've been hooked ever since Jack opened his eye. But the aspect that made me dig deeper into LOST was the connections between characters. We first got a glimpse of it when Sawyer is dragged away in the police station as Boone is talking to the cop in Australia (Heart and Minds). It showed us that these incredible and mysterious things weren't just happening to just any random group of people. And it made me need to know the "whys" behind it...and still does.

2) Oh, there are so many fantastic Lost sites out there (and thank you to all of you who take the time to put them together for us fans). Some that I frequent often are DarkUFO, Lostpedia, The Lost Podcasting Network, Lost.about.com (Bonnie Covel's site), Karen's Lost Notebook, Capcom's Lost blog, Dispatches From the Island, Lost Tidbits, Not Confused Just Lost... and of course, Stream of Consciousness. :)

3) I wrote on my blog that Desmond being referred to as "the package" might be why he is special and can withstand the electromagnetism. There is something called a "physics package" which is essentially the core of a nuclear bomb. Daniel also reiterated that for the bad things to stop "something like a nuclear bomb" would have to be set off (Happily Ever After). I'm thinking what if that is what Desmond is like? Will he "explode"? Probably not in the traditional sense.. (although, it's LOST, you never know..lol). But whatever Desmond can do has a similar reaction. This is what makes him "uniquely and miraculously special". And his "sacrifice" will be a lot like Dogen's was: Give your life to the "work" of the Island that your loved ones will live on, though you will never be with them.  I think that the constants are love and hate. Love is what helped people to "see" and "feel" what was missing. Hate is what moved MIB and Claire out of their inactive state (MIB and crazy mother, Claire going after those who took Aaron). These constants showed each group their "purpose". The variables are people, just like before in 77, and their ability to choose which will be their "constant'. Their final choice of constant determines their "side" in the war.

4) I think that Jin is the father, just like Christian Shephard is still Claire father (or we can at least, assume he is).

1) The characters, and specifically their backstory and connections. The two main touchstones of this are when it was revealed that Locke was in a wheelchair before the crash (perhaps an over-used answer, but that just shows how powerful that scene was to us all), and also as Ms Wendy says, when Sawyer is getting dragged around in the Cop shop during Boone's episode, these connections and crossovers also brought me under Lost's sway.

As a comic book fan, I find it frustrating that so few other medias utilise the backstory and crossover stuff as well as comic books do. Fair enough, comic books sometimes overplay these angles (my favourite comic book is The Walking Dead which specifically goes out of its way not to delve into backstories or crossovers) but it is very rare that a movie, TV show, book or computer game can carry out a good backstory or character crossover well. Memento did, as did Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and these three films are rightly regarded as some of the best in the world. In addition to that, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction both have character crossovers in the form of the Vega brothers, which has led to many a fan theory filling in the little bits of information not covered in the main films, and also a failed prequel attempt at telling these characters backstories.

As with these three examples, Lost is a rare breed. It has managed to telling backstories and show crossovers in a way that always genuinely excites their fans. Look at Season 6 - I'm sure few people truly cared about George Minkowski before "Happily Ever After", yet many of them probably still felt a buzz of real excitement at seeing him drive Desmond around.

2) Well, there's a ton. In addition to the Lost Blogging Collective (and my favourites there, if I had to choose, would be Sagacious Penguin's "Stuff And Nonsense", Fishbiscuitland (WW) and Not Confused Just Lost (WW)), there's also Long Live Locke, Jopinionated and Doc Jensen's Entertainment Weekly articles are always good for an informative, madcap and completely off-base read. They might not always enhance your understanding of Lost, but they certainly educate you in the way of cross-pop culture references, ideas and templates. I guess that would be loosely my top 6 of the moment, but it changes week-by-week - sometimes Vozzek will blow me away with a recap, other weeks I can seem to get away from Room 23 (WW), it just varies between about 30+ different sites. Check out my random Round-Ups for a more in-depth look at what I like to read. A final mention must go to Never Seen Lost (WW) - a blog about one man's journey through Season 6, having never seen any of Seasons 1 - 5! It makes for some pretty interesting, funny and crazy reading.

3) Desmond will be the glue of the group, or the dynamite. My initial thoughts were that he would either be forced into, or willingly undertake, a sacrifice in the manner of Charlie - his death for the life of the world. But now, having had time to think about things, I think it will be more complex than that. If Jacob and Esau/Smokey are the black and white of the Lost world, with everyone choosing sides between the two, then Desmond is the gray - the man who will blend together both black, white and everything inbetween - he will join together everyone into one big group, and together they will tackle whatever the big problem will be. Perhaps even Smokey will sacrifice himself to save the world, who knows - but my betting is, once Desmond gets to everyone (in the manner of Jacob's "touches"), they will all unite under one big, gray banner. That's my theory anyway.

4) Alt Michael? I always thought the love triangle storyline ended too quickly in the original flavour timeline, so the geek in me would love to see Alt Michael as the Alt Father. But the realist in me is bending towards Jae Lee or Jin, probably the latter for simplicity's sake.

Weekly Website - Devastate Boredom

Devastate Bordeom, run by the very cool Sarah Eliza, is dedicted to keeping absolutely everyone amused and boredom-free, in the most random and fun ways! Contained within are a multitude of free (and legal!) music downloads, TV reviews, green & cheap living ideas (including coupons, offers, etc) and a whole host of other cool stuff to keep you busy.

On the Lost side of things, Sarah provides a weekly overview of each Lost episode, nearly pointing out Answers, Questions and various notes from across the Lost message boards that many people may not have picked up on, or have simply forgotten about. For instance, in her "Recon" recap, we are reminded that Miles was initially brought to the Island by Charles Widmore (via Naomi), causing Jacob (via Bram) to try and convince him that he was on the wrong side of the war - insinuating that Widmore is not in face on the side of Team Jacob.

The best part about Sarah's site is the sheer abundance of links she provides - Lost links, music links, random links! There's plenty to keep you busy for a long, long time, so start exploring now!

Weekly Website - Fishbiscuitland

Although it would be a very close call between a truly exceptional group of blogs, if I was ever forced to choose my ultimate, favourite Lost website of Season 6, it would have to be Fishbiscuitland.

FBL's unique choice of writing style may be jarring for some, but for me it is perfect. Relying mostly on images, Fish weaves a wonderful weekly tale that is worthy of rivalling Lost's very own storyline. Her wonderful image selection and choice of quotes leads me to believe she has actually read every book written and seen every television show that has been created. Each time she posts, she manages to link Lost in with several other great stories - some obscure, some classical, some pop-culture and some mythological.

It helps to be a great consumer of stories to not only be a fan of Fishbiscuitland, but to Lost overall. However, like the TV show, it is not a necessity for enjoyment. Anyone can read a FBL post and take great pleasure in it - there are enough references, images and text to ensure that something will stick, even if not everyone will "get" ever link, but some of the metaphors are truly inspired.

It pains me to read FBL sometimes, as this is the type of blog that is so truly, utterly enjoyable that it makes me want to give up writing myself and simply devote all of my time to reading FBL archives over and over on a continuous loop. However, that feeling soon passes, and instead I am left feeling like FBL has raised the bar for other Lost bloggers like myself to try to live up to. I only hope that, out there somewhere, there is someone worthy enough to raise the bar even higher.

For now, please check out my favourite Lost blogger of the moment at fishbiscuitland.blogspot.com

Weekly Website - Lost Blog

By fans, for fans and about fans, that is the tagline for the Lost Blog, and it couldn't be more apt.

Run by an array of fun contributors, the Lost Blog comprises so much Lost stuff it even makes MY mind boggle! There's a "Tweet's O' The Day" section which collects the best Lost ramblings from Twitter (and on which I have featured occassionally). There's a fantastically full Interview section comprising artists, cast members, and fellow bloggers (and again, I have been lucky enough to be featured in that fantastic line-up).

There's a multitude of recaps and analysis. There's a weekly "We Re-Watch Lost" chatroom where everyone is invited to re-watch the latest episode of Lost and chat about it, which is then followed by "We Talk About Lost" which again is an open-invitation podcast to come chat about the latest episode.

In addition to this, there are hundreds of links to other Lost fan sites, as well as far too many internal links to mention - humour, competitions, videos, pictures, polls. Imagine a typical Lost fan site mixed with a typical Lost aggregate site, then given a large dose of steroids, and you'll have LostBlog.com - fantastic fun, incredibly huge, and a great place to check out and contribute to.

Weekly Website - Never Seen Lost

The Final Season Of Lost
As Seen By Someone
Who Has Never Seen Lost
http://neverseenlost.wordpress.com/

I'm sure you guys are feeling overwhelmed at the quantity of quality Weekly Websites this "week", however I have just found another one that I am sure you all will love.

"Never Seen Lost" is a blog like no other. While we have had the pleasure of viewing Lost through nubile eyes via our LBC member "Finally Lost" (who recently sped-viewed the first five seasons of Lost for the very first time in anticipation of Season 6), "Never Seen Lost" goes one step further and is actually watching Lost for the very first time starting with Season 6!

This has produced a hilarious, insightful and wonderfully innocent blog detailing his thoughts, feelings and theories on just what in the heck is going on. Some of the observations will be utterly hilarious to hardcore fans (immediately, he notices something is amiss with Richard's guyliner; believing Dr Ethan Goodspeed is a fake name), while some of them are just plain insightful (the reason Sawyer fell down the ladder was due to him still being drunk; why didn't Locke just call Helen from a cell phone when his van ramp jammed?).

The blog author does a great job of blending dry and sarcastic humour without tipping over the edge into bitterness. Add in his original, low-budget illustrations to accompany the Lost proceedings, and you have a hilarious, eye-opening and rather wacky Lost blog.

There isn't a great deal of posts to be read (what with it only being episode 6 so far), so I will shut up now and let you continue to experience "Never Seen Lost" for yourself.

Weekly Website - Nik At Nite

No sooner had I just updated the LBC group list, we now have our newest and 16th member - Nikki Strafford from the awesome Nik At Nite.

Nik At Nite
http://nikkistafford.blogspot.com

Nik At Nite is a very well put together blog by Nikki, who is an accomplished author and shining beacon to all hardcore fans of TV shows.

As well as having written several "Finding Lost" companion books, Nikki has put her writing talents to good use covering many other TV shows including Buffy and Angel (which gains her major cool points in my opinion!)

But this WW is concentrating on her blog - and what a blog it is. While, like many of us, Nikki provides a recap/analysis of each Lost episode, hers are focused on a list format - observations, questions and answers. This makes for some light reading after viewing several in-depth re-writes of each episode, but does not detract from the depth and skill of Nikki as an analyser.

Also, this year Nikki is providing us with several Lost Haikus for our enjoyment - and I for one love haikus! Throw into the mix videos, image competitions, random updates about other TV shows and a general focus on the readers/fans/commentators, and you have yourself a friendly, deep and well-maintained blog - Nikki has regularly maintained a 250 post per year average, but this year she is already well on her way to topping that with over 100 posts in the first 2 months alone. It's mind-boggling!

So, I'd like you all to give a warm welcome to the latest member of our Lost Blogging Collective, and a terrific blogger, Ms Nikki Strafford!

Lost - Round-Up #3 (+ Podcast Special)

Podcasts

I used to be a sceptic of podcasting - like the self-serving video blogs of YouTube, I could never understand why anyone would waste their time listening to the opinions of others over their iPod - time better spent listening to music, I thought.

Well, this week I have three ways in which I have been proven wrong.

The first is The ODI's podcast. I have discussed this more extensively in my review of his website, but put shortly The ODI (along w
ith Karen and Vozzek), provide a highly entertaining and educating Lost podcast each and every week, and your understanding of Lost is lessened if you are not a fan of this 'cast.

Check out their Season 6 so far at these links - Episodes 1 & 2, Episode 3, Episode 4 (plus a special podcast with Jeff Jensen from Entertainment Weekly).

I've recently listened to Episode 4 and my opinion of it is thus - there's plenty of personality (Vozzek describes his recent incident as a run-in with the Smoke monster), plenty of theories (Kate is a sleeper agent; the Marshall is a sleeper agent; Smokey is grooming Sawyer as a means of leaving the Island) and many a reference to great Lost-related media (The Matrix, Donnie Darko and... Home Alone!!)

The second podcast that deserves mention is Jorge "Hurley" Garcia's "Geronimo Jack's Beard". Again, I mention it in more detail in my review, but to put it plain - if you are a fan of the character Hurley, you are a fan of Jorge and a fan of this podcast!

Check it out at - Episodes 1 & 2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5.

The third and final podcast that merits special attention is the Official Lost Podcast, which is found at various locations across the interwebs (although Approaching Lost appear to maintain an up-to-date list of them). In these segments, the writers/show-runners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff talk us through various aspects of the Lost episodes - clarifying certain points, throwing out wild theories and rumours, generally goofing around like the rest of us geeks. However, upon re-listening and re-watching these segments, some startling truths emerge - long-running jokes have now become fact, little clues have been dropped, peppered amongst the talk of pantless podcasting and naming the Dharma shark (Ezra James Sharkington for those keeping up), so it is worth listening to for all fans and theorists alike.

In addition to the above three podcasts, there are a few others that I feel are worth mentioning. Although I have never had the time to check them out personally, I have heard good things about Jay & Jack, The Transmission and finally I have recently stumbled upon Lost Podcasting Network, a blog dedicated purely to fan podcasts of Lost. Once I have time, I will check these three out for myself and provide more in-depth feedback.

There is simply too much going on at the moment between the Round-Up, the Q&A, the Analysis and general blogging (not to mention real life!) to provide in-depth round-ups every week. So from now on, expect to find updates on Episode Recaps/Analysis, Podcasts and The Others.

The New Lost Blogging Collective

As many of you are aware, I have been organising a project called the Lost Blogging Collective, wherein every week (or so) I provide a round-up of everyone's various updates, as well as a weekly Q&A session conducted via email and published here for all your viewing pleasure.

This week I am happy to announce that our numbers have rocketed from 8 last week to 16 this week! This is great news from my perspective, as I had originally pictured a mere 3 or so responding to this and taking part.

So, to keep us all up-to-date with who is taking part, I provide for you all a list of the LBC and their various websites. Enjoy, check them out, comment, discuss with each other... have fun! :)

Weekly Website - Dispatches From The Island / Geronimo Jack's Beard

Dispatches From The Island
http://dispatchesfromtheisland
.blogspot.com/

Any fan of Lost should know immediately the face and name of one Mr Jorge Garcia. He is the man who, week in and week out, provides us with such great entertainment with his acting skills as Hugo "Hurley" Reyes.

The man behind the character, Jorge is just as friendly, personable, inviting and mad (in a lovable way) as his on-screen counterpart. As far back as 2007, Jorge opened up the doors into his personal life and has been maintaining, regularly, a fun, random and wonderful blog about his personal life - his adventures, his experiences, his pictures.

It is hard to describe Jorge's blog without running short of positive and warm adjectives, but suffice to say if you love the character, you will love the man, and you will most definitely love his blog.

Geronimo Jack's Beard
http://geronimojacksbeard
.blogspot.com/

The second part of this Weekly Website is a spin-off of Dispatches From The Island. As far back as September last year, Jorge and his girlfriend Beth (aka Sidekick 22) have been recording a podcast for each new episode of Lost. In these podcasts, the duo take us through the episode but the focus is more on the scripts and behind the scenes stuff, with the usual dose of fan-theories thrown in. It is awesome to hear Jorge discuss this stuff like the rest of us fans, and Beth certainly holds her own in the hardcore theorising department.

There is cute banter between the couple, with random insights into their life sprinkled all over this very fun, very awesome podcast. Again, nice words just keep flowing when trying to describe the vibe I get from listening to these (just try to spend a few minutes on their website without feeling like a throwback to the lovefest of the '60s, then you will understand all the "vibe" and "dude" talk).

It's only fair to end this Weekly Website posting by mentioning Beth's own website, which serves as a hub to her writing work. Check it out also, it is pretty funky and cool (and now... back to the 2010s!)

Weekly Website - Not Confused, Just Lost

Not Confused, Just Lost
http://ncjl.wordpress.com

Not Confused, Just Lost is a Lost website that has been run by the very personable Izikavazo for almost two years now.

Generally speaking, NCJL is the first website out of all the Lost recappers to update following each episode, but that doesn't reflect in a lack of quality. Each week, Izi takes the time to review each episode and concentrate on every character, generally giving even the most minor background characters a few sentences about their appearance.

Izi's insights and observations are one of the most illuminating out there, but is also very entertaining, with a wide variety of images to compliment the writing.

In addition to this, the comments section forms an almost mini-community of about a half-dozen people who expand upon Izi's writings and chip in with ideas of their own, leading to plenty of great debates and discussions between the commentators - this is something rarely seen on many Lost blogs, who usually fall into the category of too few commentators, or too many commentators to facilitate discussion. Izi has luckily fell right in the middle ground, having gained the loyal support of just the right number of fans to produce such good discussion.

In addition to the "revylsis" as Izi calls them (review + analysis), there are plenty of other things to keep readers interested - many posts about theories, polls, analysis of the viewer ratings and the occasional video, among other things, break up the lull between the weekly revylsis quite nicely.

In summary, this is a well put together website from a very friendly writer, and is without doubt one of my absolute favourites.

Weekly Website - The ODI

The ODI
http://the-odi.blogspot.com/

There was a time, a pre-Twitter, pre-Facebook time, when 'podcast' was the big media buzzword regarding the internet. Everyone and their uncle was having a go at podcasting, turning iTunes into a hit and miss rollercoaster much like an audio version of YouTube.

Now that the bandwagon has rolled on, few survivors are left in it's dusty wake. One of those survivors is The ODI. Each week, The ODI is joined by Karen of Karen's Lost Notebook and Danny aka Vozzek69 of Things I Noticed (both members of the Lost Blogging Collective).

These three take it in turns to dissect and bounce ideas off of one another regarding the latest Lost episode. At all times, these three provide great insight and illumination into each episode. Often their ideas are outrageous and they are soundly shooting down the more crazy theories, but everyone is given room to speak and each idea is explored no matter how crazy.

This adds up to a very friendly, professional, captivating experience which always leaves the listener entertained. The ODI makes great use of sound clips from each episode to break up the discussion and move on to the next 'chapter', and most podcasts end with a spoiler section which is, thankfully, well advertised for those who wish to remain spoiler free - if only all websites were as respectful to their various audiences as this!

These different elements combine together to create a 'show' that provides great value - the latest outing clocked in at over 2 hours, which for some may be too long, but for fans it is just right!

Of course, there is more to The ODI than simply the podcast - there's the usual plethora of videos, interviews, polls, contests, recaps etc that are found on most Lost aggregate sites (such as Room 23). However, where The ODI differs from many is in its occasional exclusives, such as a recent round-table discussion with Jeff "Doc" Jensen from Entertainment Weekly. This is truly a website that is as much for fans of Lost as it is for fans of fans of Lost! I cannot say enough good things about The ODI, so I will leave it at that and let you explore it yourself.

The only one drawback I do find with the website is that it can be a bit of a hassle navigating the various add-ons, buttons and menus, but if you persevere I think you'll find a website rich in content and enthusiasm, and one I whole-heartedly support.

Weekly Website - The Four Toed Foot

(this is the second 'weekly' website of this week, so don't say I'm not good to you!)

The Four Toed Foot
http://www.thefourtoedfoot.com/

To begin with describing The Four Toed Foot, I'm going to start with the trimmings then get to the main meal of this blog.

Firstly, 4TF, run by the fantastic Anna, provides a wealth of fun material for Lost fans - here you will find interviews, videos, contests, podcasts, more videos, shout-outs to other Lost bloggers and various other Lost-related findings.

But the main crux of 4TF is Anna's own analysis of each episode.

Usually posted on the Sunday after the show airs in both America and the UK (making this one of the few Lost blogs I can keep up with at the same pace as most other Lost fans), her analysis are very insightful and usually pick up on a lot of things that other bloggers have missed.

For example, Anna is the first blogger I have read to have instantly revisited the "skipping record/numerous iterations" theory that everyone had visited at some point during Season 5, and a theory that should have been glaringly obvious to all given this Season's new storytelling device.

Kudos also go out for noticing the piece of ankh resting at the bottom of the ocean floor along with (ironically enough) the four toed foot statue. But perhaps the biggest contribution Anna's blog has made to the Lost fandom this week is in proposing that the X in "LA X" neither means TEN nor LAX the airport - it is instead a nod to the comic book world, wherein X is used to denote an alternative universe. With our first glance at this "X" world coming from videos shown at Comi-con, perhaps this too should have been more obvious to the rest of us, but alas it is only Anna who has picked up on this thread.

A final word of praise - while I, like many other Lost fans, am busy proposing that Sayid is the embodiment of Jacob, instead of Smokey, Anna goes one step further and proposes that is is Frank, the 'candidate', who will be the future host of Jacob. It is that kind of analysing that keeps me reading Lost blogs, and I have major respect for Anna's theorising skills.

The one downfall of the 4TF in the past has been sporadic updates, but fortunately this year Anna has almost posted more in the past two months than she had done for the whole of 2009 - keep up the great work Anna!

So check out for yourself the fine work she has done over at 4TF, read more of her thoughts at the Lost Blogging Collective Q&As and particularly pay attention to her wonderful analysis.

Weekly Website - Room 23

(to make up for there being no Weekly Website yesterday, there will instead be two today - you lucky, lucky people!)

Room 23
http://lostroom23.blogspot.com

Room 23 is described as "a gathering place" for Lost fans, as opposed to a website or a blog, and this description couldn't be more apt. Updated primarily by Paul Burrows, the site lists 13 contributors and 5 spin-off sites including Spoilers, Media and a Store.

The nuts and bolts of Room 23 is rather hard to define, purely because it is full to the brim with so many rich, diverse updates. Since the site's inception in early 2008, there have been an average of 900 updates per year - an astounding figure! To really appreciate that number, you have to take into account that while most Lost websites grind to a virtual halt during the "hiatus", Room 23 managed to keep up an average 75 updates per month, making it one of THE most updated Lost fansites on the web.

The mirror image of quantity is quality, and thankfully Room 23 also has this in abundance - there are updates including videos, more videos, images, links to other great Lost websites, including our own Lost Blogging Collective (of which Paul is a part of). There are also updates from the people behind Lost, such as showrunners Damon and Carlton and "Ben Linus" actor Michael Emerson, not to mention many links to great Lost analysts, podcasts and vodcasts, including the Lost Untangled series and Entertainment Weekly's Doc Jensen. Needless to say, there is something here for everyone!

Some may discount Room 23 for 'only' being an aggregate site, but to do so is to overlook the sheer amount of effort, care and work it takes to produce such an outstanding blog. For any true Lost fan, this website is a must-have in your bookmarks.

To read some of Paul's thoughts and opinions on Lost, check out our weekly Lost Blogging Collective Q&A, and everyone be sure to pay a visit to Room 23.

Weekly Website - Kongregate

Weekly Website:

Kongregate

Kongregate is a place that combines the quick-fix hit of flash gaming with the community-based scoring of Xbox Live gamer scores.

Here, you can choose to simply spend a few hours playing a variety of short, yet extremely high quality, independently created flash video games. My favourites include the various Tower Defense games, as well as the Storm The House series. There is something for everyone here.

However if, like me, you are a rather ego-driven, high score chaser, these games come complete with various achievements and badges you can collect - kill a certain number of enemies, for example, and you may earn a badge. Each achievement comes with some points that are added to your total score, as well as a neat badge against your profile.

I had already played many of these games via NotDoppler (a website I have frequented for a long time), so I set myself a challenge - get to Level 10 within a month of playing. As you can see, I almost completed this goal, missing my deadline by a mere 3 days.

Finally, another reason Kongregate deserves praise is its emphasis on heaping accolade and money on the games developers. Ad revenue is shared with the game creators, with 25% to 50% going directly to them, as well as the opportunity to very easily donate/tip the developers of your favourite games.

I highly recommend checking out Kongregate - whether you want to chase high scores or not, there are plenty of fun games here for all tastes!

Weekly Website - Cracked

Today's weekly website is:

Cracked.com

Cracked claims to be "America's Only Humor & Video Site, Since 1958." The date alone should be enough to convince any potential reader to take the contents of Cracked with a pinch of salt.

Dubious facts and claims aside, Cracked remains a very regularly updated and maintained humour zone. The variety of content on offer (articles, videos, spoof essays, to name but a few) of course leads to the occasional misses amongst the hits, but scratch the surface and begin digging into the wealthy archives and you will find many a great article, the vast majority of which should hopefully amuse you, entertain you and occasionally educate you.

Weekly Website - DarkUFO

DarkUFO

Where to begin with DarkUFO?

Arguably the catalyst to the explosion of the Lost-fandom, and certainly the blogging scene, Dark has consistently provided a collection of the broad spectrum of Lost-fandom - from video podcasts, to blogs, to the latest spoilers.

It is in this area that DarkUFO sprung to infamy when a person by the name of "Lostfan108" approached the webite with intricate details of the ending of Season 3. DarkUFO, after consulting his readership, decided to print these spoilers, causing the "radio silence" of the up-until-that-point-minor-spoiler-happy Lost creative team. It is of no suprise to learn that Dark also runs http://www.spoilertv.com/

Mild controversy aside, Dark's service to the Lost fandom is incredible, having regularly provided a base for any Lost fan to begin their travels amongst the various blogs, sites and collectives on the web. Regularly updated, and very well populated with regular contributors and fans, this is a major stop along the internet roadmap of Lost fan sites.

(DarkUFO is also a part of my Lost Blogging Collective - please click for more info.)

Weekly Website - Not Doppler

NotDoppler.com

One of my favourite websites, NotDoppler collects some of the best flash games on the internet and provides them in one convenient location. For the regular, but casual, gamer - perhaps someone who hasn't got a lot of time to search and play many games to find the best manually - this website is an absolute treat.

Updated promptly once per week for almost 5 years, NotDoppler provides a regular dose of, on average, 6 games to play, and they are generally the very best games around, covering all genres and levels of skill.

NotDoppler is the best website for the casual gamer, without a doubt.
